Testimonials and Reviews

‘ I really like the striking melodies, the poetic nature of the lyrics and the different ways in which the mood of the music evokes a song’s meaning. If you are the Musical Director or Chair of a Choral Society I would urge you to give Ray’s work a listen. Admittedly it is different, but we are fairly traditional and it fitted in.

Our audience enjoyed the concert, and there has been very positive feedback about Ray’s pieces. We certainly enjoyed singing them – it wasn’t Beethoven’s Hallelujah Chorus from Christ on the Mount of Olives that was going through my head the next day, but Ray Saunders’ “Over and Over.”

As a member of Weston Choral Society,  I found it a privilege to have the opportunity to perform the work of Ray Saunders, a fellow singer. For us it was a step into the unknown, and a very rewarding one it proved to be. I am sure I speak for many of our number when I say that I found the harmonies, melodies and subtleties of rhythm stayed with me for a long time afterwards, and that the marriage of words and music was not only very skilful, but also often haunting and evocative – especially in “I hear you calling”. Additionally the contrasting styles of the different songs made the set a very satisfying performance-piece.

As a member of the audience and a constant attendee at Weston Choral Society concerts, I can also truly say that the contrast between the traditional music and Ray’s compositions made the Christmas 2012 affair one of the best I have been to. I look forward to hearing more in future concerts and can recommend Ray’s music to other societies who wish to be progressive in their choices.

I really enjoyed singing the four songs written by Ray Saunders at our Christmas concert. The songs were very original and had beautiful harmonies. The feedback from members of the audience was also very positive. They enjoyed the blend betwenn Ray’s more contemporary music and the traditional choral muisc. The highlight for many was the song Crooked Wood, which was a combination between a tenor solo and the whole choir. Many commented that they would like to hear more of his work in the future.

I sing in the alto section of Worle Community Choir, & this cantata was a departure for the choir from our usual repertoire. After conquering a fear of the more complex harmonies, I began to thoroughly enjoy our rehearsals, loving the beauty of the chords & the variety of techniques (with sections of the choir singing alone, to be joined by other sections as the songs progressed). The concert was a joy to perform.

‘ What an honour it was to sing Ray’s beautifully expressive cantata ‘ A Better World.’ With so many heart stirring pieces it is difficult to choose a favourite; perhaps Crooked Wood, Ever in Hope or Let me in…but in its entirety the cantata had a poignancy which touched the soul of both performer and audience. A wonderful production.’

‘ I thought the music simply beautiful and the words were very moving. I’m sure that it would make a wonderful stage performance. I feel very privileged to have sung in the first performance of ‘ A Better World. ‘

‘ The Cantata ‘A Better World ‘ was a triumph….the harmonies were   haunting and reflected extremely well the trauma of oppressed people everywhere.

The narrative made the story live and breathe and the artwork projected on the wall behind the choir provided an excellent backdrop.’

‘ This was really a moving and enjoyable performance, a feeling echoed by the many members of the audience to whom we spoke. Thank you for giving us all the opportunity to share your music. Brilliant. ‘
